Add Some Extra Style

Contemporary Lighting Fixtures

Contemporary lighting fixtures have come a long way since the days of ceiling lights on an electrical cord in the center of the room.

Contemporary lighting fixtures come in a wide choice of shapes and sizes. Gone are the days of having the traditional bulb hanging from a cord in the middle of the ceiling with a shade over it.

The variety now includes floor lamps, table lamps, spotlights, touch lamps, wall lights, pendant lights and highlights. Of course we now have eco-friendly lighting and energy saving light bulbs as well. You just have to choose what is right for your taste.

I suppose the first basic choice to make is whether you want it in general to be very bright or more soft lighting. Whichever you go for, there are still ways to alter that to suit the atmosphere that you are trying to create.

As technology advances there are many more options available to light our homes. The choice of lighting fixtures will change the character of any room.

If you want to do a lot of reading, perhaps in bed, bright bedside lamps may be ideal for you.

In the kitchen where you need to concentrate in detail in your food preparation you may like under shelf lighting where you are working.

Let us assume that the meal you are preparing is a romantic dinner for two. Once the cooking is over and you move into the dining room, you might prefer some mood lighting.

A dimmer switch allows you to change the atmosphere at the turn of a knob. If you want to adopt an old-fashioned approach kerosene lamps offer a soft light just right for romance.

Or simply use candles, they will always be in fashion for the right moment.

In days gone by the commonest fitting in a large enough room was ceiling lights in the form of huge glass chandeliers with candles in them.
The candles were replaced with special shaped bulbs to give the same effect.

The effect that you can get from varying your lighting fixtures from room to room is based on three things, color, texture and tone. For example, fluorescent lights tend to give off a beam which is bluey green in color.

It is fair to say that you need to pay attention to each room and mirrors can help as well. Bedroom lights should not be the same as in your living room or bathroom and so on.

Similarly lighting outdoor areas is very different to indoors.

It is so much more easy to change the lighting when we wish now that there is such a selection. Floor lamps can be moved very quickly to accentuate a certain part of the room if you would like to.

Flexibility is probably the biggest advantage that we have with contemporary lighting fixtures today.
