Nowadays it is possible to get a wide range of battery powered rechargeable cordless table lamps for any area of your home. In the past cordless lighting in general was a bit ugly and unsophisticated. In fact they were often no more than glorified flashlights. Technology has moved on a lot since those days.
A popular room to use them in is the dining room. They are often used as an alternative to candles which some people are concerned might cause a problem with smoke around the food. Standard table lamps are not very practical as they tend to take up too much space and have the wires dangling everywhere. The most emphasis needs to go on the guests, the wine and the food.
The way that they look and the materials they are made of are determined by the limited amount of space available so they do tend to be as small and compact as possible and are rarely very elaborate. Of greater concern is the light distribution, whether it is direct or diffused. It would be more important to have a softer light for a romantic dinner for two than if you had the all the family with their children around for a meal.
In order to save extra space, the fittings and dimming switches are often put underneath the lamp. This gives more room but can be inconvenient if you need to sort them out in the middle of eating.

Safety is not really a challenge as they operate at a safe 12V whilst a low wattage halogen bulb will remain at a cool temperature. They have incorporated a micro controller which frequently monitors the charge and includes a battery cut off if there is a problem. Apart from the smoke mentioned earlier, there is also no naked flame (we once had a christmas decoration on the table catch fire from the candle), or dripping wax.
Cordless table lamps are much more flexible than those which run on candles or paraffin which used to be very popular. You can change the make the lights brighter or dimmer easily dependant on the atmosphere that you want to create. They normally have about three different strengths with the brightest setting being way above that of any candle.
They can be used in other rooms apart from the dining room and can even be used outdoors if required. There is a vast range of colors from black table lamps for the daring through to pastle colors for the less brave. We have talked about saving space but you can also get them bigger for a different occasion if you
have plenty of room.
Particulary if you are a bit limited in the amount of space you want to take up or if you do not like unsightly wires, they offer an excellent alternative to the normal ceiling light.
The defining factor in your choice of lighting may be cost. You can get cordless table lamps at a cost you can afford, they can just be throwaway cheap table lamps or you can pay as much as you want.
